What kinds of improvements would be helpful?
Renpy already has a self voicing screen reader, I have mistakenly turned it on sometimes so it works. It is toggled from keyboard with the key “v”.
v0.20 for what?
It was the 2 year old post about Steam release:
“then I will consider putting it on steam. This will probably be around v0.20 if I had to guess,”
It was this post: https://itch.io/post/6933815
I’m sorry for posting my wrong recollections about the Steam release plans.
For readers of this thread: the plan from 2023 may not be the plan anymore.
You asked the same thing 2 years ago.
Runey then answered:
One day I hope to! But Harem Hotel has many problems in the earlier parts of the story, both from a visual and story writing perspective. (The biggest issues I see right now is all of android’s story up to around level 25, and all of the dungeon content aside from F&E’s)
Once everything is on the same level of quality and the game is polished a ton more with things like themed music, then I will consider putting it on steam. This will probably be around v0.20 if I had to guess, it’s a lot of work to remake everything. (This is about the 5th time I’m redoing stuff now for some things)
Will it be on steam in the future?
From what I remember from old discussions, it is not planned to release on Steam.
Correction: I have since found this https://itch.io/post/6933815 two year old post where developer discusses Steam release
Like always, the next version is released when it is ready.
Is the next update anywhere close on this year?
Depends what you consider close.
My guess is next version is released before September, but that is only based on the v0.18 having been released in August 2024 so update yearly. I do not know the developers schedule or plans.
Playing on Linux, Ubuntu 24.04.2, game version v0.18.2. I noticed today if I press the D-key, game shows “Reloading script ..”, stays there for a while and then shows exception. Game seems wonky after that. I tried it twice (first time by accident), I believe this happens every time D is pressed.
The traceback is very long, 599 lines so I paste only beginning and end here. I have the complete file stored, so I can provide it if needed.
The RenPy hotkeys lists I found did not show action for D. I’ll try more careful typing, and not touch D anymore.
I’m sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

That screenshot is not very useful, it does not show the requested information.
The full name of leftmost folder is not shown, but I assume it is harem-hotel-win.zip, the zip file you downloaded.
The other folder is harem-hotel-win, a bit strange since the folder extracted from the zip should be Harem_Hotel-v0.18.2-pc. Is the harem-hotel-win an empty folder? Did you create it yourself?
Anyway, if you double click the zip folder, the extraction should start and folder Harem_Hotel-v0.18.2-pc is created, possibly not on Desktop folder but the extracting window should show where it is extracted to. Try to find the Harem_Hotel-v0.18.2-pc folder, there you should have the game file that you can click to start the game.
If this does not help, consider asking a windows expert to examine you computer, maybe something unexpected is going on.
Or try a Youtube video, try searching for example “download and install game from itch.io”.
Seems you have downloaded the .zip file successfully.
Have you unpacked the zip archive to some directory on your Windows 11 computer?
A screenshot of the situation would clarify what is going on, like Runey suggested. Show directory listing, the File Explorer screen of the directory where the zip file is and of the directory where files unpacked from the zip went.
Is the free space on the disk? The unpacked files are about 13 Gbytes.
Where did you download the zip file from?
Which exact file did you download?
Did the download succeed?
Did you unzip the downloaded archive and it was successfully installed to some directory?
What operating system and version is on that computer you use?
What files are now in the directory the game was installed to?
The “More information” part (above Download on this page) says “Updated 3 days ago”.
My understanding is that refers to updates to this web page. It was the text “How to play on android” which was added three days ago.
Itch.io is not very good with timestamps and having sensible dates on the download files.
I propose adding text “How to play on Android” between the image and item 1.
It may be players use browser that translates the text to some other language, so they see the itemized list but the translator in browser ignores the text in the image.
This would also help finding the Android instructions, text search would find the “How to play on Android”.
Like Runey tried to explain, if you are playing on Windows like you state, you do not need Joiplay and should not install it on your Windows PC for playing Harem Hotel.
On Windows, download the PC version of Harem Hotel, unpack it, then run it by clicking the .exe file.
Note there are two .exe files, one is for 32-bit Windows, the other is for 64-bit Windows.
You can even search google for Joiplay Windows installer and there isn’t one offered anywhere.
If you have discovered that, you should not expect a game developer to provide you with an installer that does not exist.
My guess is Joiplay on Windows is for developers testing Joiplay who do not want to do the testing on their Android phone.
If old version is a beta version, save games probably will not work.
If old version is a released version downloaded from this website, save games should work.
You did not say are you playing on Windows, Mac, Linux or Android. Some Android users seem to have had problems with save files when updating. Other platforms should work without issues, if updating is done properly. I play on Linux, install new version to a new directory tree, copy save files from old directory to new and continue playing. If you use the patch file, read the instructions, they are inside the zip in a README -file.
Note that developer recommended starting game from beginning for version 0.18, since there is new content available in the beginning of the game.
